Poetics of Clouds

We know clouds. All our lives they’ve been floating beautifully, and sometimes, scarily, above us. In this class, we’ll bring clouds down from the sky, so to speak, and into our lives and words as we try to write both about them and through them.

About the event

Inspired by the International Cloud Atlas published in 1953 by the World Meteorological Organization, complete with old photos of clouds over Northern Europe, we will borrow the cloud as a metaphor for our writing. A brief discussion  about the “lives” and “bodies” of clouds (in which among other things we will talk about “mother clouds” and “species” of clouds) will lead us outside to spend some time under the sky as we begin to write. Our cloud poems and short prose naturally will be about other things as well…..what do you see in clouds, have clouds always traveled with you, do clouds of memories keep raining on you, are you made of sun clouds or storm clouds, and on and on and on…..join us, and the clouds!  No experience necessary.

Supplies needed: If you have some, bring photos of clouds you are particularly drawn to, or perhaps photos you’ve taken yourself.  Bring a notebook and something to write with.  Class size limited to 8 to ensure a small group experience.

* Studio located in Potomac, Maryland.  Address will be given at registration.

** All ELP writing groups will have a joint end of season public reading.  Date and Location to be announced.
